Zumwalt went to sea

On the morning of December 7, 2015, for the first time, the American Iron Shipbuilding Company Bath Iron Works of General Dynamics Corporation in Bath (Maine) set sail for factory trials of the new type DDG 1000 Zumwalt. The destroyer of futuristic appearance with a length of 180 meters and a displacement of about 15 thousand tons, accompanied by tugboats, proceeded along the Kennebec River from the shipyard to the open Atlantic Ocean.

Bath Iron Works received a $ 1.4 billion contract from the US Department of Defense for the construction of the new generation DDG 1000 Zumvalt lead ship on February 14, 2008. The actual construction of the Zumwalt at the shipyard began on February 11, 2009, and the official bookmark ceremony took place on November 17, 2011. The ship was launched without special publicity on October 28, 2013, the baptism ceremony was held on April 12, 2014. From the very beginning, the construction program has undergone significant delays and cost increases due to the avant-garde nature of the ship, and currently lags behind the contract terms by about three years.
The cost of building the lead ship is now estimated at $ 4.4 billion. The ship is scheduled for delivery by the US Navy on the current schedule by the end of 2016.
In 2009, the US Department of Defense made the final decision to limit the series of ships of the DDG 1000 Zumwalt type to only three units (in total, 32 originally planned). Since 2010, the Bath Iron Works is also building the second destroyer of the same type DDG 1001 Michael Monsoor (the official bookmark ceremony took place on May 23, 2013). The third ship DDG 1002 Lyndon B. Johnson was started by building at the Bath Iron Works in early 2013.
