On November 24, in the Engineering, Manufacturing, and Development (EMD) phase, BAE Systems received an ILC contract worth $ 103.8 million, and SAIC - $ 121.5 million for the construction of each 13 (with an option for three more) prototypes of their car with tests them for two years. Each company must produce 13 prototypes in 2016, with the beginning of their intensive tests in January 2017. In the spring and summer of 2018, the ILC should determine the final finalist of the ACV tender, and issue the contract to the winner for the supply of 204 first production machines of the first phase of the APC program (APC 1.1) in 2020-2023.
The ACV (Amphibious Combat Vehicle) program is a further development of the Marine Personnel Carrier (MPC) program for acquiring a new type of 8x8 wheeled armored personnel carrier for KMP. In 2013, the MPC program was “frozen” and in 2014 it was revived as ARS. The first phase of the ARS (ARS 1.1) program assumes the purchase of 204 vehicles in the armored personnel carrier version corresponding to the MPC program assignments, and in the second phase of the APC 1.2, another 400 modified vehicles will be purchased in various versions, including fire support vehicles. In total, the KMP plans to equip six battalions with APCs, retaining on upgrading four more battalions modernized AAV7A1 armored personnel carriers (392 units).
In addition to the offers from BAE Systems (VBA) and SAIC (Terrex 2), Lockheed Martin Corporation (with its original ACV original machine) and General Dynamics (with the APC Piranha ACV), as well as the small American company Advanced Defense Vehicle, also participated in the tender for the ACV program. Systems (ADVS) with its own project, about which there is little data.
According to the DefenseNews information, both selected applicants for further development under the ACV program (proposals from BAE Systems and SAIC) on preliminary tests demonstrated superiority to competing outsiders in speed and distance sailing on water and in patency on soft soils. Both selected vehicles showed a speed of seven miles per hour on the water and a reserve of buoyancy of 21 (SUPERAV) and 23 (Terrex 2) per cent, respectively. Both cars have enhanced mine protection with a V-shaped armored hull.
