The mouse does not work on the built-in laptop, what should I do?
The popularity of laptops is explained not only by their compactness and the possibility of easy transportation, but also by the presence in the composition of all key components. It is fundamentally impossible to buy a new laptop computer, in which, for example, manufacturers will forget to install a hard drive or provide a keyboard. The owner, coming home with the purchase, can be sure that it is worth pressing the power button, and the computing system starts.Nevertheless, this approach has its negative sides.
Comparing personal and laptop
Since in a stationary computer all components are available (except for models with sealed enclosures), it is easy to check the performance of each of them. But if, for example, the built-in mouse on a laptop does not work, then this is tantamount to a small local catastrophe, since the usual methods of testing in this case are inapplicable. The same goes for wireless communication modules, video adapters, etc. There are, of course, diagnostic methods, but they differ from those used for personal computer components.
Managing the cursor in a laptop computer
In modern applications and operating systems that have a graphical interface, it is very difficult to work without a mouse or device that implements similar functions. Therefore, all laptops come with a built-in solution called a touchpad. A small rectangular surface on the front of the case in front of the key block is the active element. In some models, there are three additional mechanical buttons, as in the classic mouse, while others use full touch control. If the mouse on the laptop does not work, the problem is in the touchpad. Surprisingly, the majority of calls to service centers about the inability to control the cursor are solved in a few seconds. The fact is that the developers have provided the function of disabling this device using hot keys, which is unknowingly activated by many laptop owners.
How to enable the touchpad
So, the mouse does not work on the laptop. What to do? First of all do not panic. On all models, regardless of the manufacturer, the Fn button is necessarily present. The inscription on it is often highlighted in color. Upon careful examination of the keyboard, you can find a few more buttons that have captions with the same coloring. Pressing any of them simultaneously and Fn activates one or another function. For example, by choosing the shaded / clear “sun” in this way, you can adjust the screen brightness. And using the hand button on the background of the rectangle, the user can turn off or turn on the touchpad. Thus, if the mouse on the laptop does not work, then the first thing to do is to press Fn and, holding it, the second button that controls the touch pad. On models from Acer it can be F7. One click - on, followed by - deactivation.
The nuances of using control "hot keys"
Moreover, this feature is available regardless of the installed software. If the mouse stopped working on the laptop, then the above combination could be accidentally pressed during the game, working in office programs and even when making adjustments to the BIOS.But the buttons to manage the service functions (for example, "E" in the upper right corner of Acer) work only after installing the appropriate software. This is a very important point to remember. To control the touchpad does not need any drivers, no support from the operating system. In addition, the selected state is remembered by a laptop. That is, if the mouse does not work on the laptop, and its shutdown was performed by “hot keys”, then reinstalling the operating system does not solve the problem.
Of course, far from always the answer to the question “Why doesn’t the notebook mouse work?” Is as simple as mentioned above. Sometimes the solution of the problem has to be approached comprehensively. If the mouse does not work well on a laptop, then you need to install a driver that allows the operating system to interact correctly with the touchpad. Currently, manufacturers of portable computers most popular products of three firms - ALPS, Sinaptics and Elantech. The easiest way to determine the type of touchpad used is by opening the instructions. The second option is to see the information line.
If the instruction is lost
If for any reason there is no access to the accompanying documentation, then you can use the Windows system to determine the touchpad manufacturer. To do this, proceed to the “Device Manager”, select the item “Mice and Pointing Devices”, press the right button on the selected device by calling “Properties”. Then everything is simple: in the tab “Information” you need to select “Equipment ID”. In the displayed list, it remains to find ACPI and carefully read what follows this record. If the word is “Syn”, then you need to download and install the touchpad drivers from Synaptics; “PNP” means ALPS, but “ETD” corresponds to Elantech.
If nothing helped
In that case, when all the above methods have been tried, but the problem persists and the mouse on the laptop still does not work, you should use the advice of experienced “laptop scientists” - disconnect the power supply and remove the battery. The meaning of this action is that all the residual charge is removed from the internal electrical circuits. Sometimes this is enough to fully restore the touchpad.
It is also useful to remember that it is not recommended to use the built-in touchpad and an external USB mouse at the same time.In particular, if both devices have installed drivers from the manufacturer. The fact is that in such situations, the analysis of possible conflicts is “on the conscience” of the operating system, for which, for obvious reasons, this is not a priority. The conclusion is simple: if the mouse does not work on a laptop, then you only need to leave it turned on, disabling the touchpad. Or do the opposite, depending on the wishes of the owner.
Some models of laptops have in BIOS the item responsible for the activation of the touchpad. Accordingly, the use of this device must be enabled (Enabled). To get into the configuration program, you should immediately press F2 or some other key immediately after energizing (depending on the manufacturer and model).
And before you carry a laptop in a service center, it makes sense to try to reinstall the operating system. Or, alternatively, restore the previous checkpoint while it was still working. Of course, the latter is possible only if this feature is used in Windows.
